Internship at Q*Bird’s Digital Design Team

Q*Bird logo

We will tackle the question of how to implement communication between quantum hubs and nodes, including both photonic clients and processing nodes, at both the hardware and software level. We will integrate the control of Metropolitan Hubs into a classical network infrastructure.

We are looking for a new recently-graduated SW or digital logic engineer to focus on digital design and digital signal processing on FPGAs. Your role entails designing, building, testing, and documenting such systems, while keeping alignment with other scientists and engineers on the team. You do not need to have previous experience with FPGAs but you do need to have the right way of thinking about digital systems. If you’ve really understood CPU architecture courses, written your own Arduino libraries to interface with other microcontrollers, or have resorted to bit hacking in your higher level programming, then you have the right idea. If you’ve understood how John Carmack’s fast inverse square root function is implemented (and are excited to build more hacks like it) then let’s talk.

The best candidates are Master’s or PhD Students or recent graduates in engineering, electronics, computer science, or comparable.

  • Have strong programming skills in a low level language like C, C++, or Rust.
  • Have skills in digital electronics/design, electronics, and practical experience with test & measurement equipment.
  • Have interest and experience thinking in terms of Bits (versus bytes), Clock cycles (versus instructions)
  • Are comfort moving between abstraction levels and answering questions like:
    • “Is the voltage on this physical pin correct?”
    • “Are we setting this signal to TRUE at the right clock cycle?”
    • “What is the best higher-level type to hide all these signals?”
    • “What is the best organization of our modules to express our design intent?”
