Machine Learning–Assisted Characterisation of Quantum Emitters

The Quantum Materials division at LIST has recently established an in-house foundry for nanophotonic fabrication, colour centre implantation, and comprehensive characterisation of siliconcarbide based quantum hardware. In parallel, we are developing high-throughput characterisation methods for spectral stability, emitter quality, and spin manipulation.

Building on these capabilities, we aim to extend our characterisation toolbox with machine learning–based methods for
efficient and intelligent emitter characterisation.

A key challenge in quantum emitter characterisation is the significant measurement time required to perform a complete set
of experiments. Our current optical setups already support automated, sequential execution of multiple measurement types,
are fully remotely controllable, and operate continuously (24/7). In this internship, you will investigate how machine learning can further accelerate this process by enabling real-time data recognition and adaptive suggestion of subsequent measurement steps. You will work with state-of-the-art quantum optics and spectroscopy equipment, contribute to an active research environment at the interface of experiment and data science, and receive close guidance from experienced researchers.

Your profile:

  • Bachelor’s degree (BSc) in physics, applied physics, engineering, or a related field
  • Prior experience in experimental physics or optics (e.g. advanced lab courses or internships)
  • Interest in quantum technologies, data-driven methods, or automation
  • Experience with Python for data analysis, hardware control, or machine learning is a strong plus
  • Ability to clearly communicate in English

LIST offers:

  • A thriving interdisciplinary and highly international environment.
  • Working at the scientific forefront with colour centres in silicon carbide.
  • Potential to make a significant contribution to current scientific challenges.
  • Salary: 1000€/month.

About Quantum Materials Group

The Quantum Materials group focuses on the development of semiconductor quantum hardware for quantum technologies. Our emphasis is set on the semiconductor silicon carbide (SiC), for which synergies with the high-power electronics industry pave the way for industrial-scale quantum-chip fabrication. Our research expands the current fabrication methods to the generation of efficient quantum colour centres, nanofabrication of photonic integrated circuits (PICs), post-fabrication treatments to improve stability and spectral properties, and application-relevant quantum benchmarking.
