Pan-European Quantum Internet Hackathon 2025 brings together quantum enthusiasts to explore quantum internet applications

On 28 November 2025, QIA hosted the Pan-European Quantum Internet Hackathon 2025, bringing together researchers, developers, and students from across Europe to collaboratively explore and implement quantum internet applications in a hands-on, one-day format.
Following a joint virtual kickoff, participants formed teams locally at nodes in Amsterdam, Dresden, Paris, Poznań, and Santiago de Compostela. Teams then worked intensively throughout the day using the SquidASM quantum network simulation framework, selecting challenges to develop and test a range of quantum internet applications.
Participants could choose from seven challenges designed for different experience levels. Beginner challenges introduced the basics of quantum networking through simple quantum key distribution exercises, helping participants get started with programming in SquidASM. More advanced challenges explored how quantum networks could support real-world applications, including coordination between remote parties, secure digital payments, and more complex protocols such as blind quantum computation and leader election.
The hackathon was organised with support from QIA partners, with SURF, TU Dresden, and Veriqloud (in partnership with EPITA) hosting the nodes in Amsterdam, Dresden, and Paris, respectively. External partners PCSS and CESGA hosted the nodes in Poznań and Santiago de Compostela, ensuring smooth local organisation and participant support across all sites.
The hackathon concluded with a shared online presentation session, where teams showcased their progress and exchanged insights across nodes. All projects developed during the event have been compiled and are openly available on GitHub.
The event highlighted the growing strength of Europe’s quantum internet community and QIA’s commitment to lowering barriers to entry while advancing meaningful, application-oriented innovation in quantum networking.
